Suara Welitoff

Suara Welitoff. Presentation by Manuel de Santaren.
A project by Elena Forin.

LaRete Art Projects is happy to announce Suara Welitoff’s exhibition, that will be introduced the day of the opening by the American collector of video and new media art, Manuel de Santaren.
The exhibition is purpose thought by Elena Forin for Upside Down, the space -supported by Galleria Bianconi- that LaRete Art Projects conceives as a platform for research.
In Suara Welitoff’s (New Jersey, 1951) found footage videos, simple actions are repeated. Thanks to her interventions her works are connoted by an hypnotic power and by a deep poetical intensity. "I research and collect moving images hoping to find some kind of action or gesture that triggers a sensation of resonance or recognition. Drawing attention to the way that images from popular culture and media intertwine with personal experience, my inquiry touches on the fragile and elusive nature of time. By focusing on the subject, reducing context, and through the use of color, framing and close-ups, a state of suspension results where details that fix the footage to historical time and place are filtered out".
Manuel de Santaren is a Boston and Washington DC collector whose main focus is new media/video art primarily based on performance, appropriation of mass media imagery and animation. He is the co-chair of the photography committee of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York where he has championed the acquisition of video works for the permanent collection. He is on the Board of Overseers of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and a member of the Executive Board of the Cisneros Fontanals Foundation, Miami, FL.
