Maria José Arjona. VIRES. EXERCISES ON POWER – EXERCISES OF CHOICE

Performances curated by Julia Draganovic and Claudia Löffelholz, launched by LaRete Art Projects
in collaboration with Art Fiera Art First Bologna and the Biblioteca dell’Archiginnasio Bologna, Italy

Exercise #1 -3, June 22nd thru 24th 2010: Historical city center of Bologna, and Teatro Anatomico of Archiginnasio, Bologna, Italy
LaRete Art Projects is proud to present Colombian performance artist Maria José Arjona for the first time in Italy.
Arjona gained the reputation of being one of the most outstanding emerging performance artists of Latin America due to her recent showings at the
Watermill Center on Long Island (NY), the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin and as the only visual artist participating in the reenactments of Marina Abramovic’s historical pieces in her recent retrospective at the MoMA New York.

VIRES is the title of a series of exercises concerning power structures and the freedom of choice. Maria José Arjona researches individual, social and political power restrictions and invites her audience to rediscover its own possibilities of choice and physical interaction.
In Exercise # 1 the artist will take her audience, one by one, on a site seeing tour thru the historical city center of Bologna, starting in Piazza Maggiore. Exercises #2 and #3 are interactions the artist developed for the venue Teatro Anatomico of the Archiginnasio di Bologna.
